Iris

I did a study of the iris that are blooming.  For the violet shades, I experimented with using cobalt violet, manganese violet, Winsor violet (dioxazine), and a mix of phthalo blue with quinacridone magenta.  For this composition, Winsor violet was the best.  Copyright 2015 Charles Snell.

Still Life

I set up a still life scene and painted it on a 6 in. x 6 in. Ampersand smooth finish panel.  It was fun to use transparent oxide red along with ultramarine blue in the darker tones. (c) 2015 Charles Snell.

I attended a workshop with David Rivera on August 18, 2012 at Artists of Yardley in Yardley, Pennsylvania.  The Janney House was the setting for the still life shown above.  Copyright 2012 Charles Snell.

Orchid Study

Here is another small floral painting.  At first I was using some cobalt violet for the petals, but the hue was too cool.  I mixed in some alizarin carmine to warm the tone.

Sunflower Study 2

Here is the same sunflower, facing toward us.  The sunflower has an interesting variety of textures to model, with smooth petals and an intricate disk.  Copyright 2013 Charles Snell.
